Colt Mustang VS Sig-Sauer P238

An unusual departure for my gun reviews, but it isn’t often that you get to see an original and a remake at the same time. I’ve reviewed each individually, and now I will just let you see them side-by-side.

A view from above. Notice the ejector port has been cut all the way over the top in the Sig version. The rounded versus square is also very evident from above.

All the pieces.

You can really see the rounding of the grip on the Mustang. The grip plates on the Mustang do not go all the way to the edges where the p238 does, adding to the difference in the feel.

It’s HAMMER time!

Right down the muzzle.

Single versus dual spring and redesigned pin. (The one with the “ears” is the Sig)

Barrels are different. (sorry for the blurry pic)

Even the magazines are twins

The Mustang wins on looks, feel, comfort and accuracy (for me). However, to buy one now would cost twice as much as the P238 of similar design and current production. Since I am not a collector, I would go with the P238 as a purchase and would be very happy with it. The P238 would require some kind of mod to that trigger for comfort.

  1. Mustangs....often imitated, never duplicated......Best .380's ever made.
No wonder they have appreciated so much in value. If you are a collector, try to find a n unused one with original box and papers and lock it all up for safe keeping...you'll be glad you did.
Better yet, find a White Stallion or a Black Stallion, custom collectibles (only 250 of each ever made). You don't even need to be a Colt collector to appreciate these gems!

  2. So if the Colt Mustang was so great, why did they stop making them? Just curious.

  3. Colt Mustangs were not all that great. The Walther PPK is a better gun for carry. Colt people would take a dog pile if it had the rampent colt on it. I have several colts and they are good guns, but I have also seen the sigs and they are very well made fit and finish.

  4. I like the Colt Government .380 better than the Mustang. The mustang´s grip is too small.

  5. I also agree with the last comment! The Colt Government Model .380 ACP was superior to the Mustang for overall feel & handling! It was plenty small for concealed carry! Sig should have brought out a .380 that matched the size of Colt's Government Model .380 ACP & not the Mustang! Pistols that are too small-Are very difficult to shoot with any accuracy at all in an emergency self defense situation! I positively dislike any grip that you can't get your pinkie finger around! Most of these short grip guns don't have enough magazine capacity as well!

  6. I just sold my Mustang and got me a SigP238 insted, the Sig is like the mustang had an upgrade at the custom shop. And it suits me much better as an of duty carry gun, it's slimmer and I shot better with it. I was happy with the Colt, but even happier with the Sig.

  7. I had a Colt Mustang Pocket-Lite model, the size & weight where perfect, I loved the gun, until the frame rails wore down because the receiver is aluminum, and the slide is stainless, this caused the slide to not fit properly and get stuck all the time, I'm wondering is the Sig going to have the same problem over time. I did eventually trade the Colt for a Llama-380 III-A at a gun-show, the Llama is great, but the size and weight don't compare to the Colt.

  8. I have both. I like the Colt better. The Sig has always had issues feeding and ejecting. Should have sent it back and had them fix it. But didn't. Carry the Colt in a pocket holster all the time when not working.

  9. I own the Sig 280 P238, less pricey than the Colt. Both are beautiful guns. I also notice that the stainless magazine clips for the Sig are MUCH better quality. I'm told that the Colt and Sig clips are interchangeable, so I would prefer the stainless smooth operating Sig magazine clips.

  10. Correction: Should be a 380, not 280. Sorry 'bout the error.
